CREEP remixes Wetdog

It's only been a week or so since we mentioned CREEP's remix of Baghdaddy's Hot Shit, but they are already back with another remix. This time they've dedicated their dark electronics to a rework of the all girl British band Wetdog and although there's really not much that you will recognize from the original version, it's probably a great indication of what we can expect from CREEP. Either way, I'm really liking this sound right now and I'm definitely looking forward to more from Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard as CREEP.

Really, France?

Only in my dreams is smoking like that. And only in my dreams can my hair actually look THAT good. From our lovely friends at OMG Blog, I've seen just how gay France actually is. Or gay friendly. Is it okay to hi-five over this blatant sexual ad? Too late. In a quest to cut down on our generation's smoking hobbies, France has released these photo ads which will probably have the opposite effect.

In other news, this is actually what my life as a smoker has been thus far:

NGUZUNGUZU Got U/Ring to It Video

Check out this awesome video from NGUZUNGUZU's for Got U/Ring to It. The AMAZING Leilah Weinraub made the video. I love her and I love this video!

SSION - Clown

Even though last time we wrote about SSION we got dissed on twitter (apparently we aren't 'cool' enough to post about Cody Critcheloe or SSION?) we're still gonna post about SSION. In fact, I hope everyone posts about SSION because without people spreading the word about indie/underground/weirdo artists nobody would know who or what a SSION is, or alot of other awesome bands/artists/whatevers for that matter.

Anyways, SSION released a video for their song Clown today. The video is a re-edit of clips from SSION's BOY and looks SPECTACULAR. I didn't get a chance to see BOY when it screened in Chicago, so I'm hoping they release a DVD version or something because it looks amazing.

Enjoy the video for Clown and the Glass Candy remix of the song and check out the trailer for BOY too!

HOT Body WEIRD Face: Zac Efron Edition

Zac Efron has a hot body, but the only thing wrong is his creepy as fuck baby face. 9 year old boy face does not belong on 20-something fully developed MAN BODY. Those abs! That bushy-but-not-too-bushy treasure trail. His HAIR. It's too much. In Korea, they have something called "Aegyo", which roughly translates from Tae-Youngese into "unbearable infuriating cuteness". It is enough to send ANYONE into a rage, gay, straight, or already angered. It should be illegal for him to be seen in public until he reaches the riper age of 30. His face is too unbearable to handle. It's like he crawled out of the womb and banged some shit up on his way out TO HIS COMPLETE ADVANTAGE. Whatever happened to men being men? When did everything get so difficult? On average, I find myself drooling over boys a million times a week and about half of those turn out to be lesbians. And they're hot. I'm already confused enough, the last (Or first) thing I need is to fall in love with a lesbian I was convinced was a boy. Which might explain a lot about Zac. Anyone remember that South Park episode? In the end, I don't want to fuck a baby. It's illegal and creepy. Zac Efron's face is enough of a warrant to stay away before I end up on To Catch A Predator. The only thing that is keeping him from being totally shunned by me is this:

GAY RAGE.

P.S. There are like, 800 of these things. Don't expect me to pick up the phone.

P.P.S. I assume your beard knows what a hairbrush is. Use it.

Welcome to the club

I guess this guy from Vampire Weekend came out recently? Or he's always been out and I'm 10 years too late? Either way, welcome to the club, Rostam Batmnaglij. There will be pie and punch.

In other news, when I think about it for 5 minutes, I don't really give a shit unless pie and punch is definitely served.

Vampire Weekend - Diplomat's Son
Apparently this is the only gay dancehall love song in existence

Discovery - Swing Tree
And this is his side-band.

We're getting close...I can feel it.

A new video from iamamiwhoami was posted this morning! I'll admit, I'm getting a little bit frustrated with iamamiwhoami because they keep stringing us along, but it's too late to stop now. If you read the youtube comments people are still convinced it's Xtina, other non-music followers believe it's The Knife, we've got some Robyns + Royksopp in the mix, and even a Lykke Li. I, for one, am convinced now more than ever that I have no idea.

The "clues" aren't helping me, they just make everything more witchy and confusing. HOWEVER, look at the nose at :47 and then google a picture of Christina Aguilera's profile. Pretty similar. The profile plus the busted grill might turn me back into a Christina believer. But really, who knows.

Watch and discuss.

Light Asylum

There are so many ways to discover new music these days. Whether it be from a friend, Hype Machine, other blogs, magazines or whatever, there are SO many ways! I can chalk up my recent discovery of New York's Light Asylum to twitter. When you're going through your tweets and JD Samson calls a band "Best Band Ever!", you should probably take notice. So I did, and now I'm sharing them with you!

Light Asylum is pretty much a moniker for singer/songwriter/musician Shannon Funchess. Even if you're like me and are just discovering this project, you're probably more familiar with Shannon Funchess than you may think. She toured as a vocalist with !!! in 07/08 and was a featured on Heart of Hearts. More recently she lent background vocals to Telepathe on Dance Mother and appeared in their So Fine video. She's also worked with Bunny Rabbit and the Cult of Miracles and TV on the Radio, so between all of that stuff, you've probably at least heard Shannon Funchess' unique and fantastic voice!

As far as Light Asylum goes, she's began working with Bruno Coviello and they have a show with MEN coming up in New York, but no word on a record. She is, however, working on a record with TV on the Radio's Gerard Smith under the name Rose Parade. Let's hope for more music coming out from Shannon Funchess in 2010 in either form!

Here is Light Asylum's shallow tears remixed by Fatima Al Qadiri and the original, as well as !!!'s Heart of Hearts featuring Shannon Funchess on vocals. AND if you are in NYC, check out Light Asylum with MEN March 10 at the Mercury Lounge.

CREEPs

CREEP is a new project from Brooklyn's Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard of Dreamburger. Although there are a couple of clips of the duo's original stuff on their Myspace page, their first release into the "blogosphere" is an awesome remix of Baghdaddy's Hot Shit. Can't say I've ever heard the original, but I think I like the remix better.

If the clips and remix aren't enough to be excited about, they've also recorded two songs with Romy Madley Croft on vocals for their upcoming release on new label TriAngle Records!

Check out the video for Hot Shit, a XX remix and some other spooky jams since I've been loving this witchy stuff lately.

Just because something is old, doesn't mean it isn't good. In fact, the opposite is often true. I love sharing new music, but sometimes it's fun to dig in the virtual crates and bring out something a little older. So, here's a mix that the fabulous Kim Ann Foxman did for Beats in Space in 2008! It's chock full of classics, so it is just as good now as it was then.

Check out part 1 for Kim Ann's mix and part 2 for the transition to Beats in Space's Tim Sweeney. I've also included a couple of individual tracks from the mix so enjoy some oldies but goodies this evening!

Mind Reader CFCF Remix

If you are a reader of music blogs...which you probably are since you're reading this one...you've probably heard some CFCF remixes. Montreal's Mike Silver (AKA CFCF) has already turned out great remixes for HEALTH, Crystal Castles, Fan Death, Sally Shapiro (plus a bunch of others!) and now you can add Kingdom's Mind Reader to the list.

The CFCF remix brings the energy down a little bit, but keeps the vocal pretty much in tact, making it sound more like a fresh r&b song than the dancefloor jam that is the original. Good stuff!

Check it out along with a cover of Fleetwood Mac's Big Love below! AND don't forget to pick up the limited edition 10" of Mind Reader on Acephale!

The Gay 90's: Burn her, throw her in the river!

We all did it, knew someone that did it, or knew vaguely of it. I'm not talking about meth, vogueing, spandex bike shorts, or secretly buying the NSYNC christmas album. No. I'm talking about WITCHCRAFT.

The 90's was a very huge time of learning identity. People were coming out, going back in the closet, species were being discovered (I was REALLY into dinosaurs, alright? Leave me alone). But the weirdest trend? TEEN WITCHCRAFT. Paganism, Wicca, earth mama, whatever you want to call it, witches were popping up all over the fucking place. Sidenote: One time I called a dude a warlock and was on the receiving end of the gayest rant ever about how Warlocks were actually evil or yada yada yada. I was TALKING about THIS Warlock, stupid.

Anyways, it did predate the whole "going green" thing didn't it? Nature. Treat others how you want to be treated. Don't harm no motherfuckers unless you want to go to the unspeakable place. Or something. Actually, as I remember, shit came back like, 1308103810 worse for you if you say, cast a spell where you willed someone to fall down a flight of stairs. I've been paying for that shit ever since 1997. DON'T CAST EVIL SPELLS. Of course nowadays, we lack nice witches. Everyone is into ghosts. Ghosthunting. Demons. Chip Coffey. It's all about the supernatural instead of paying attention to the natural shit around us. We have real lives to tend to. We don't have cameras and red lighting and gay mediums and all that shit. NO. Back then, all witches had was nature, elastic waist earth tone ankle skirts, ill-fitting tank tops, and hella books. THEY PREDATED THE INTERNET.

Which is why, readers, I PRAISE the 90's witch. They should be honored, presented with medals, given a gift certificate to a vegan/vegetarian friendly hip-but-not-too-hip bistro, and a hummer in a hummer. Those bitches knew how to apply beliefs to REAL LIFE instead of taking shit so literally.

Go on with your badass self, 90's witches.

Stevie Nicks - Edge Of Seventeen

The Knife - Rock Classics

Kate Bush - Waking The Witch

I seriously cannot say no to Chip Coffey.

Sarah Jacobson Benefit in BK

A little while back I posted about the films of Sarah Jacobson. Oddly enough, there happens to be an event in Brooklyn to celebrate her work Monday, February 15. The event is a benefit for the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant which provides funding for young women “whose work embodies some of the things that Sarah stood for: a fierce DIY approach to filmmaking, a radical social critique, and a thoroughly underground sensibility.” There will be a screening of her film Mary Jane's Not A Virgin Anymore with an introduction from filmmaker Barbara Hammer and Sarah's mother Ruth and tributes from Kathleen Hanna, Tamra Davis, George Kuchar and more!

If you are in New York PLEASE go to this event and celebrate the memory of a great feminist/D.I.Y. filmmaker and support the future of feminist/D.I.Y. filmmaking!

Details after the cut.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS SARAH JACOBSON

An evening to honor DIY filmmaker Sarah Jacobson

And a benefit for the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant

February 15, 2010

7 pm doors, 8 pm show

Glasslands Gallery, Brooklyn, NY

On Monday, February 15, 2009, filmmakers, punk rockers, feminists, and musicians will gather to remember filmmaker Sarah Jacobson (1970–2004). The evening will include an appearance from Sarah’s mother Ruth Jacobson, and her sister Lee Jacobson. There is a $5 suggested donation at the doors, and all proceeds will go to the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant, which supports independent young women filmmakers.

Sarah Jacobson (1971–2004) was a a filmmaker who wrote, produced, and directed several movies in the 1990s, including “Mary Jane’s Not A Virgin Any More” and “I Was a Teenage Serial Killer.” Sarah’s films reflected her punk sensibilities, her feminist beliefs, and her dedication to DIY principles. She and her mother Ruth Jacbson brought “Mary Jane” to the 1997 Sundance festival, and it was named by Film Threat as one of the “25 Underground Films You Must See.” Sarah was active in the music scene and directed several music videos, including one for Man… or Astroman? She died in 2004 at the age of 32.

After her death, filmmaker Sam Green and Sarah’s mother established the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant for young women “whose work embodies some of the things that Sarah stood for: a fierce DIY approach to filmmaking, a radical social critique, and a thoroughly underground sensibility.” Since 2004, the grant has been awarded to eight filmmakers: Marie Losier, Natasha Mendonca, Kara Herold, Gretchen Hogue, Joanna Dery, Vanessa Renwick, Ellen Lake, and Veronica Majano.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Sarah Jacobson” will celebrate Sarah’s life and work. It also launches the grant cycle for 2010 and information about applying for the grant will be available at the event and on the website: http://sjfilmgrant.wordpress.com/.

The evening will begin with a short screening of samples of previous grant winners and two of Sarah’s short films. Filmmaker Barbara Hammer and Sarah’s mother Ruth will then speak and introduce “Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Any More.” The evening will also include video tributes from Sarah’s fans and friends including Kathleen Hanna, Allison Anders, Tamra Davis, Michelle Handelman, George Kuchar, Sam Green, and Craig Baldwin.

Glasslands is located at 289 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211

Diamond Rings

Keeping with the Valentine's Day theme of the weekend how about some Diamond Rings? Actual diamond rings probably sell like hotcakes this time of year with all of the opposite marriage proposals that happen...but who cares about all that! I'll take my Diamond Rings in the form of music from Toronto based musician John O'Regan. If you are an avid blog reader or from Canada you may know Mr. O'Regan from his band The D'Urburvilles but he's been making cute and catchy electronic bedroom pop as Diamond Rings since last summer too. AND besides the music, he's put out a couple of the best no budget music videos I've seen in a long time with the help of directors Colin Medley and Jared Raab. LOVE John's dancing and the choreographed dance numbers, the 90's-esque green screen sequences and the cameo from Kids on TV's John Caffery in the new video!

Check out the brand new video for Wait And See along with the video and mp3 for All Yr Songs. Also check out the Diamond Rings Myspace page for tour dates with Owen Pallett, at SXSW and more!

Diamond Rings - All Yr Songs

Crappy Valentine's Gay

So Valentine's Day is around the corner and this year is a fresh year. I don't need flowers or candy and shit cause I'm gonna be kickin' it with my independent women parts 1 AND 2. Every fucking year it's always like boo hoo, being single sucks. You know what? I don't even want to have to think about what shit to pick out for someone. If I had my way, a boy would be like, I picked you up McDonald's and brought over the entire first season of Freaks and Geeks. You ready to chill? And you know that's how shit is with me.

To kick off the girl party, Robyn's new song has leaked and if you recognize the fat squishy bassline, it's because Diplo produced it. Also some jams from Mapei, The Pipettes, and Kelis. Valentine's Day is gonna get fucked up.

Robyn - No Hassle

Mapei - Video Vixens

The Pipettes - Our Love Was Saved By The Spaceman

Kelis - They Say (ft. Kid Cudi)

Valentines Schmalentines

So, with Valentine's Day coming up it's a good time to post some love songs! I can't say I really care all that much about Valentine's Day but show me a person who doesn't like a good love song. There are probably millions of songs about love, but I've picked out a few of my favorites for this V-Day weekend and I'm not gonna lie, you will probably find some of them super cheesy. I get that...but love is cheesy and I love love...so maybe try to see past the cheese and think about the person/people/things/whatever you love.

Alexander McQueen

I'm not a fashionista by any stretch of the imagination. I can't name drop obscure designers or pick out who made something by silhouette alone, but I love fashion that transcends the ordinary to become something bigger than beautiful. Clothes and shows that are challenging and inspiring and true art (and often times beautiful as well). I think every designer probably says that's what they aim to do, but in my opinion very few actually accomplish it. Alexander McQueen was someone who did. Over and over again. Even as a casual follower of high fashion, I will surely miss his work.

Take a look at some of McQueen's work and a video of the most amazing thing to ever happen at a fashion show.

RIP Alexander McQueen.

You still think it's Christina?

Mysterious YouTube user iamamiwhoami posted another video today. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty confident after watching it the artist behind the campaign is NOT Christina Aguilera. I mean, they're practically giving it away in this one...but I don't recognize the woman in the video! But who knows...maybe the woman in the video is just a guest vocalist or simply a model.

Give it a watch, take a guess and enjoy my dark and darker horse candidate The Golden Filter's new single Hide Me.

(and if you haven't seen the other videos click here and here to catch up)

Gaggle

As much as I may complain about Pitchfork being douchey, I still read it. Most of the time they are falling all over themselves about Animal Collective or Thom Yorke or something, but sometimes they hit on something I've never heard before that actually interests me. Such is the case with London based-22 strong-all girl "alt choir" Gaggle.

Gaggle are kind of like an exploded Telepathe or maybe a post apocalyptic Spice Girls or a giant Chicks on Speed reboot. They have just enough dark and quirk to be pretty much awesome and I'm glad I arrived at the party (albeit a little late). You can check out Gaggle on Myspace and look for their debut single I Hear Flies on March 8th from Transgressive Records. In the meantime, check out I Hear Flies and a couple of other tracks below!

Excuse me...EXCUSE ME

MTV and Paramount Pictures have released information regarding the May 11th release of the COMPLETE SERIES OF DARIA. FINALLY. Now we can see our beloved Fashion Club as much as possible. We can giggle with Daria and Jane when Upchuck starts some shit. And we can gaze dreamily at Trent and ask ourselves why our own lives are so barren of these imagination people. I want to go there.

The best part? It's the ENTIRE series in 1 allegedly low priced 8 disc set. Uh...I don't care how much it is. My bank account will be depleted as soon as this hits the market.

In other news, how come nobody told me the following things:
1. Nick Jonas went solo and I now have the option to suffer through performances with Kevin?
2. MGMT is working with Royal Trux frontwoman Jennifer Herrema?
3. WATCHING THIS WOULD BLOW MY MIND:

It's been a while since Lindsay did anything super buckwild. Because we've all gotten used to it. Well, how about Lindsay being a HOARDER interviewed by NIECY NASH!? Just when I think the old wrinkly bag has run out of steam, here comes Lindsay ready for action with all sorts of madness in her pockets.

It's definitely a feminist dance party kind of day:

Go Do

Fans of Sigur Ros must know by now that frontman Jonsi will be releasing his first solo record Go this coming April. Back in December we heard the first single Boy Lilikoi and now we're getting another taste of the record with the video for Go Do. Although I've never been a big fan of Sigur Ros, I'm enjoying what I've heard so far from Jonsi's album. Maybe it's the English? Maybe it's Nico Muhly? Who knows.

Anyways, take a look at the new video and enjoy some music Jonsi has made.

Must See TV

Is it just me or does it seem like there aren't awesome underground films being made anymore? Maybe I'm just out of touch and don't ever hear about them...but I feel like the queer/riot grrrl/punk/weirdos of the 90's made awesome no budget films that captured life in those scenes. For instance, I saw Sarah Jacobson speak about Mary Jane's Not a Virgin Anymore in a tiny theater in Ohio when she toured it in the 90s. That was probably the first time I realized that girls could make movies and that you didn't have to be in Hollywood to make movies and that queers, punks and weirdos could hang out and listen to Heavens to Betsy while making movies. It was amazing and I'm really glad I got to be there. What do we have like that now? The internet is supposed to connect us to anything in the world that we're interested in, but I still feel like the community of people making art in the queercore and riot grrrl scenes were more connected than we could ever be. I think that there was something special about trading tapes and zines and touring with your projects that has been mostly lost. It's my dream to have some sort of "homo a gogo on wheels" touring queer/weirdo fest so kids can once again cram into some tiny theater in Ohio or wherever to see this kind of stuff in person and hear people speak about their work and see bands play live and make friends IRL.

But until the boy/girl revolution comes again, enjoy these trailers for some movies you might not ever get to see* and some
music from them (or related).

*If anybody has any of these, I'd really love a copy!
