Teengirl Fantasy remixed Light Asylum

Me and about 30 other people saw Teengirl Fantasy last year when they opened for Telepathe at the Empty Bottle. I can't speak for those people, but I've been a fan ever since. Teengirl Fantasy make psyched out, mind-dance music and they remix all our favorite songs. They've already remixed Pictureplane & Hunx and His Punx and now they have done an awesome rework of Light Asylum's Shallow Tears. They take the dreamy original and amp it up a little without losing that something that makes the original so special. It's not a club version by any stretch, but the remix feels lighter, more dancefloor friendly and could be a great song to end a night of dancing.

Check it out along with one of Teengirl Fantasy's originals.

We Are Born Preview

Sia has posted 6 full tracks on her website from her upcoming album We Are Born. It's kind of hard to get a feel from the album by only hearing half, but it seems full of straightforward pop songs* that will probably be a great summertime listen. Sia will also be setting out on a world tour in April, so you'll probably get to hear the rest of the album sooner than the June release date.

Take a listen to a couple of the songs here and jump over to Sia's website for the rest and her tour dates.

*When I say pop you know I mean like pop in the good way, not pop in the Ke$ha-Katy Perry-messy garbage sort of way. Speaking of pop..here's Sia's take on Britney's Gimme More.

Eurovision 2010: Never Forget

Man, America is missing out in the worst way possible. Eurovision 2010 is already at the final stages, but along the way, gays everywhere have been striking stoner gold on YouTube. I've compiled all these performances in one post because these men (or in Eric Saade's case, manboys) have 1 thing in common: they all look like Donny Osmond at some point in his creepy somewhat successful career. Peter is a direct throwback to Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Case in point:

How do I know of this? Oh yes children, when your mother is a big musical theatre junkie, whether you like it or not, at some point it rubs off on you. Real badly. There isn't a day where "All That Jazz" isn't in my head. THANKS MOM.

First things first: This dude Eric Saade is a presenter for some Swedish kids television show. Secondly: Please pour more water on him. He can be my manboy any day of the week. And by manboy I mean do all my errands for me.

Peter Joback (I can't figure out how to to do an umlaut) knows how to let loose and have some good old fashioned all-American power ballad fun with structured militaristic jackets and fringe. Side note: Does anyone know how to do the umlaut on a Mac? Listen, don't get huffy with me, I just figured out how to do a screen cap so eat it.

This was from last year, but as you can see, they really should just have Dima Bilan come back every year to start the festival with this exact same performance. WIRES. TREADMILLS. PAPER WALLS. CONFETTI. ANGELS. PAPARAZZI. What more do you people want out of life? Because I am ful-FILLED. Also, I major LOLed when his jacket got caught on his wires and he couldn't get it off. So he finally gets to that rage boiling point and turns around the get it off and still NOTHING GOES HIS WAY. Thank you, backup dancer.

Still no idea

Ok, totally going out on a limb here...but the voice in this new iamamiwhoami sounds exactly like Bat for Lashes to me. Could Natasha Khan be behind this project? Granted, she just came out with a record last summer and I haven't heard of a follow up being made, but if this isn't Natasha Khan singing there's someone that sounds A LOT like her involved.

Obviously the girl in this video is disguised, perhaps she's disguised in all of them and is not really blond all. Her blue eyes are definitely contacts and the image is heavily distorted. I'm not saying that this is necessarily Bat for Lashes in the video or her project exclusively, but I wouldn't be surprised if she (and potentially other vocalists) have lent their talents to some other artist.

Also take note of the men in the video, they seem to be disguised as well. It's not a positive ID, but they could easily be Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge, aka Royksopp. Anybody remember their collaboration with Robyn? How about when they featured Karin Dreijer Andersson on vocals? It's not unlikely that this is something like that.

But what do we know? We've been sure it was Christina Aguilera, Little Boots, The Golden Filter, Goldfrapp and everyone in between. Anyways, watch and discuss.

Bat for Lashes - Pearl's Dream (Blossom and Surrender remix)

Royksopp - The Girl And The Robot (ft. Robyn)

EDIT: Thanks to a comment from our friend Carla (and this theory blowing up on the whole rest of the internet) we may now finally know who iamamiwhoami actually is. There's a lot of evidence pointing to Swedish artist Jonna Lee. There are definitely some physical similarities, the whole Swedish thing, some twitter updates and other stuff pointing to her...so this could very well be it for the mystery. I still think the voice sounds like Bat for Lashes more than what I've listened to from Jonna Lee, but any voice can be manipulated so I guess that's not saying much.

So here's a track from Jonna Lee and a photo to compare. I'm kind of sad that this could be the end, and a kind of disappointing one at that.

"you wanna see it?"

uh kinda.

March 19th cannot come fast enough!!!!!!!

Fuck Winter 2010

I do apologize for my music links being a bit wonky this week. Apparently, you've all cause SO much traffic that it's been temporarily shut down. I assume that's a good thing? It just means I'm sharing music with people who REALLY love music. Pop music, weirdo noise music, whatever. And that's what this blog is all about aka sharing things with people who'd be interested and receptive to what we're doing. So thank you guys for fucking up my Dropbox account <3.

In other news, warm weather has finally hit Chicago and everywhere around the city people are breathing a sigh of relief. Winter sucked. It was terrible. It really is the fucking one thing that never fails to send me aboard a train to shit town.

Wait, what's that you say? It's spring? AND there is new music by the handful waiting to be released? Oh shiiiittttt. These songs have popped up in the past few weeks and they've really set the mood off for THE BEST SUMMER EVER.

First up is The Pipettes! I recently gave away their teaser track "Our Love Was Saved By The Spaceman", which was an upbeat ditty about aliens erasing a bad boyfriend's mind. Where are these aliens and please help a bitch out on Earth. After losing their record deal/leaving their labels Cherrytree/Interscope AND Memphis Industries, and having about a half dozen members leave, The Pipettes are returning April 19th with the release of the "Stop The Music" single on FORTUNA POP(The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Allo Darlin, Tender Trap). It's a real melancholy disco romper. And by disco, I don't mean Sylvester. God I love Sylvester.

Yeasayer "ONE" By: Radical Friend from ODDBLOOD on Vimeo.

Yeasayer have released the first single and video from their second album "Odd Blood" and this is like, the exact opposite direction I'd thought they'd go towards. Their first album was really jangly with hints of pop floor madness, but they really took the concept and ran the fuck out with it. "O.N.E." is a smash (Although it's not their first mainstream entry to pop world, that would be their collab with Simian Mobile Disco on the "Audacity Of Huge" track). I'm really excited for whatever else they can think of.

I'll be back sometimes with proper links, but it's warm outside and I have the day off and frankly, I just wanna sit on my back porch and jam out. Spring 2010 is gonna be the best Spring ever. Fuck haters.

Noisy Pig Replica

Bernardo Santarelli aka Berlin-based weirdo musician Noisy Pig will be releasing a new EP titled Replica on March 15. Replica is a 6 song limited edition CD/digital release and features collaborations from Stereo Total's Brezel Goering and Bratmobile/Partyline's Allison Wolfe. The CD version also includes a video and a "Replica origami box" so if you like more bang for your buck, you might wanna get the physical release.

In the meantime, check out a track from Replica, download an unreleased Noisy Pig remix from Hawney Troof and visit Noisy-Pig.com for more details on shows and stuff!

SXSW

So, I'm really bummed out that we aren't gonna make it to SXSW this year. First of all, I've never been and think it's about time I go. Second, who doesn't wanna see TONS of awesome bands/artists/djs/films/whatevers all in one place? And besides all that it's so fun to see friends, not work and be wild for a week. BUT...I'm not going. However, there's always next year (and maybe next year will be even better) and MAYBE you'll even see some sort of Young Creature/Soul Ponies collabo!

However, this is 2010 so let's forget about next year for now and check out some of the stuff that would surely be on our schedule this year.

My World Gay.0

Lesbians of the world, do not be afraid, Justin Beiber is NOT one of you. Once in a while (ok, more like everyday), a blog debuts that blows my mind so far out of the field I can't not love it. CRTL+W33D, SCAB, Boys + Cats, Awkward Boners...I can't believe such thoughts even exist. And I'm totally jealous. It seems that more and more weird as fuck queer blogs keep popping up, Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Beiber being no exception, but more like a welcome addition to a growing family of crazy. Love it.

Beyond Fantasy

If you like Trance Doll, you'll love Beyond Fantasy. Ok, so it's not actually a designer impostor perfume...it's an awesome new song from Pictureplane! Not sure if this song/rework of the 1992 UK hit Let Me Be Your Fantasy (from Baby D) is gonna end up on Pictureplane's next record, but I'm guessing we might hear it at one of the shows he's playing with Washed Out and Small Black on their current tour. Either way, I'm a big fan of Pictureplane and this is another stellar jam.

Check out Beyond Fantasy, Let Me Be Your Fantasy and tour dates below!

New Runaways trailer

A new full length trailer for the totally lesbionic Runaways movie has been put on the 'net! Here's a synopsis: every time we see Kristen Stewart's Joan Jett she's making some kind of lesbian sex eyes at Dakota Fanning's Cherie Currie, the end. It's such a total lez fest I can't even really deal with it right now.

Besides teenage lesbianism, I guess this movie is about a rock band. KStew and DakFan (there's really no good way to give her a nickname) actually performed the vocals for the songs in the movie and their rendition of Cherry Bomb has been leaked. Surprisingly, it's not that bad.

Check out the trailer and the song and mark your calendars for March 19 if you're in a city getting the limited release or April 9 if you're not.

Goldfrapp's "Rocket" Video

The video for Goldfrapp's Rocket was released a couple of days ago and features Allison Goldfrapp blasting a person (in a duck tape mummy suit) off into space. There are also some futuristic dancing girls and lots of purple sky. Who knew a song about sending someone away on a rocket would result in a video where someone is sent away on a rocket? Deep. Either way, the video is nice to look at and it has a sense of humor, so I'm not a hater.

Rocket comes out March 8 and you can pick up Head First March 23 on Mute, but check out these sweet remixes RIGHT NOW.

HOT Body WEIRD Face: Lil' Wayne Edition

Look at this fine ass specimen. Lil' Wayne has established himself as one of the most prominent faces of hip hop in the last 5 years, rightfully so. That man stacks verses better than tetris. He is my Sylvia Plath (I skipped over her in high school. And Nirvana. SRRRRY). Until Cam'Ron comes back, that is.

I have to say, I like a dude who rocks tattoos and all that shit, blasting music in his car bass turned all the way up. A proper rude boy, as Rihanna says. Fucking 8319031-pack stomach, rap dreads not hippie dreads, sagging pants and all that shit. LOVE IT. AND he also used to date TRINA. AND he has like, 80 tracks with Nicki Minaj (who I've recently finally come around to loving. Any girl who calls themselves the black Barbie is like, A++ in my book. Plus she's half-dyke or 2/3 GAY). It's like striking gold and then striking gold again vicariously. However, and you had to see this coming, THIS is very much a deal breaker:

Srsly? WTF. TEETH. I don't quite understand grills and I probably never will, but if you read the article and go to "health hazards", the mention of gum disease is enough to send me running to dry hump a bottle of Listerine. It worries me. Wayne, you should start taking your oral health much more seriously. HE'D BE SO MUCH HOTTER WITHOUT THEM. Other offenders: Kelis, Paul Wall, Nelly. They are so not worried about gum disease.

Anyways, I'd imagine Lil' Wayne would be the perfect hot gentleman boyfriend sans grills. They just make his already large mouth seem larger, whether that's a benefit or not...aside from the fact his face is kind of creepy. I guess he'd be a classic butterface? This would be the closest term I could use except for the fact that when his mouth is closed he is also perfection-ish. It's the mouth.

Chicago loves the remix

So since our blog was added to Hype Machine (and use Soundcloud) we get a lot of music sent to us. Most of it is stuff we'd never post because it's either bad or just not relevant to our (primarily) queer blog. However, since we are in Chicago I feel like we should support a couple of local artists who are doing some pretty great stuff.

The first of the songs I'm gonna highlight from Chicago area producers/djs comes from This Guy I Know. We first internet-met TGIK when he sent us over a remix he did of Bright Eyes' First Day of my Life in response to our Valentine's Day post, and we're sure glad he did. TGIK has a way of reworking songs so elegantly that they could easily be mistaken for an original version, and this Yeah Yeah Yeahs Maps remix is no exeception. Good stuff!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps (TGIK Remix) (Alt)

The next selections are from Chicago's Midnight Conspiracy. Midnight Conspiracy are producers/djs/party-throwers and bloggers for the Members Only AV blog and are getting a lot of attention for their remixes. They've only put out a couple of remixes so far, but they're both really good, so it makes sense they'd be all over the 'net. I tried to choose which one I liked best to post, but I'm just gonna give you both! Check out a dubstep remix of Esser's Headlock and a hyped up dancefloor version of Chromeo's Night By Night.

Esser - Headlock (Midnight Conspiracy Dubstep Remix) (Alt)

Hole?

Today a song called Skinny Little Bitch was released under the band name 'Hole'. For those of you who didn't live as a teenager in the 90's, that was @CourtneyLoveUK's band that was pretty awesome and important to a lot of girls and gays. The band that wrote Skinny Little Bitch, however, is the not the Hole of the 90's. This incarnation of Hole is Courtney Love and some studio musicians writing irrelevant alt-rock music. There's no Patty Schemel, no Eric Erlandson and not even a Melissa Auf Der Maur anywhere near this, so for our purposes, let's refrain from calling it Hole.

Hole, for a lot of us, was like a gateway band into riot grrrl. Without Hole would Midwestern kids like me have heard of Bikini Kill or countless other 'girl' bands? I'm not so sure. Their influence on weirdo teen girls of the era is undeniable. But besides all that, Live Through This consisted of great song after great song and although not AS good, Pretty On The Inside is a classic too. To be honest, I still think Live Through This is pretty much amazing and will proudly wear my Hole tshirt whenever I dig it out of the pile of black tshirts on my floor...But I would be lying if I said I liked this new song. I mean, I it's no surprise since Celebrity Skin was terrible as well, but with so much talk over the years about Nobody's Daughter I guess I just expected more from "Hole".

But you don't take my word for it...

And check out some vintage Hole too!

Owen takes off his shirt

Owen Pallett has released a (very slightly NSFW) video for Lewis Takes Off His Shirt from his latest album Heartland. Jason masks, witches, knives, orange Crush and some sweet animation all make appearances, so take like 5 minutes and check it out!

I am....

Another video from iamamiwhoami was posted today. Many of the people following this viral series, myself included, believed the 6th video would be the final reveal. We were wrong. What we have gotten from this video is music that sounds pretty different from the ambient music featured in the earlier videos, 'iam' spelled in blood, 'Welcome' spelled out in sticks and the mysterious woman saying 'Why'. Oh, and a monkey drawing. Which totally makes sense.

With all the build up this better lead to something AMAZING. However, I'm keeping my hopes down because I'm feeling more and more like this is gonna be someone I've never heard of.

One commenter on the YouTube page mentions that the stains in the snow are similar to the above photo that The Golden Filter posted on their Tumblr yesterday. Interesting, but the music in this video doesn't sound anything like what The Golden Filter have done so far in their career and the photo doesn't really match either. I'm saying that's a coincidence.

But really, I still have no idea. Do you?

CREEP remixes Wetdog

It's only been a week or so since we mentioned CREEP's remix of Baghdaddy's Hot Shit, but they are already back with another remix. This time they've dedicated their dark electronics to a rework of the all girl British band Wetdog and although there's really not much that you will recognize from the original version, it's probably a great indication of what we can expect from CREEP. Either way, I'm really liking this sound right now and I'm definitely looking forward to more from Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard as CREEP.

Really, France?

Only in my dreams is smoking like that. And only in my dreams can my hair actually look THAT good. From our lovely friends at OMG Blog, I've seen just how gay France actually is. Or gay friendly. Is it okay to hi-five over this blatant sexual ad? Too late. In a quest to cut down on our generation's smoking hobbies, France has released these photo ads which will probably have the opposite effect.

In other news, this is actually what my life as a smoker has been thus far:

SSION - Clown

Even though last time we wrote about SSION we got dissed on twitter (apparently we aren't 'cool' enough to post about Cody Critcheloe or SSION?) we're still gonna post about SSION. In fact, I hope everyone posts about SSION because without people spreading the word about indie/underground/weirdo artists nobody would know who or what a SSION is, or alot of other awesome bands/artists/whatevers for that matter.

Anyways, SSION released a video for their song Clown today. The video is a re-edit of clips from SSION's BOY and looks SPECTACULAR. I didn't get a chance to see BOY when it screened in Chicago, so I'm hoping they release a DVD version or something because it looks amazing.

Enjoy the video for Clown and the Glass Candy remix of the song and check out the trailer for BOY too!

HOT Body WEIRD Face: Zac Efron Edition

Zac Efron has a hot body, but the only thing wrong is his creepy as fuck baby face. 9 year old boy face does not belong on 20-something fully developed MAN BODY. Those abs! That bushy-but-not-too-bushy treasure trail. His HAIR. It's too much. In Korea, they have something called "Aegyo", which roughly translates from Tae-Youngese into "unbearable infuriating cuteness". It is enough to send ANYONE into a rage, gay, straight, or already angered. It should be illegal for him to be seen in public until he reaches the riper age of 30. His face is too unbearable to handle. It's like he crawled out of the womb and banged some shit up on his way out TO HIS COMPLETE ADVANTAGE. Whatever happened to men being men? When did everything get so difficult? On average, I find myself drooling over boys a million times a week and about half of those turn out to be lesbians. And they're hot. I'm already confused enough, the last (Or first) thing I need is to fall in love with a lesbian I was convinced was a boy. Which might explain a lot about Zac. Anyone remember that South Park episode? In the end, I don't want to fuck a baby. It's illegal and creepy. Zac Efron's face is enough of a warrant to stay away before I end up on To Catch A Predator. The only thing that is keeping him from being totally shunned by me is this:

GAY RAGE.

P.S. There are like, 800 of these things. Don't expect me to pick up the phone.

P.P.S. I assume your beard knows what a hairbrush is. Use it.

Welcome to the club

I guess this guy from Vampire Weekend came out recently? Or he's always been out and I'm 10 years too late? Either way, welcome to the club, Rostam Batmnaglij. There will be pie and punch.

In other news, when I think about it for 5 minutes, I don't really give a shit unless pie and punch is definitely served.

Vampire Weekend - Diplomat's Son
Apparently this is the only gay dancehall love song in existence

Discovery - Swing Tree
And this is his side-band.

We're getting close...I can feel it.

A new video from iamamiwhoami was posted this morning! I'll admit, I'm getting a little bit frustrated with iamamiwhoami because they keep stringing us along, but it's too late to stop now. If you read the youtube comments people are still convinced it's Xtina, other non-music followers believe it's The Knife, we've got some Robyns + Royksopp in the mix, and even a Lykke Li. I, for one, am convinced now more than ever that I have no idea.

The "clues" aren't helping me, they just make everything more witchy and confusing. HOWEVER, look at the nose at :47 and then google a picture of Christina Aguilera's profile. Pretty similar. The profile plus the busted grill might turn me back into a Christina believer. But really, who knows.

Watch and discuss.

Light Asylum

There are so many ways to discover new music these days. Whether it be from a friend, Hype Machine, other blogs, magazines or whatever, there are SO many ways! I can chalk up my recent discovery of New York's Light Asylum to twitter. When you're going through your tweets and JD Samson calls a band "Best Band Ever!", you should probably take notice. So I did, and now I'm sharing them with you!

Light Asylum is pretty much a moniker for singer/songwriter/musician Shannon Funchess. Even if you're like me and are just discovering this project, you're probably more familiar with Shannon Funchess than you may think. She toured as a vocalist with !!! in 07/08 and was a featured on Heart of Hearts. More recently she lent background vocals to Telepathe on Dance Mother and appeared in their So Fine video. She's also worked with Bunny Rabbit and the Cult of Miracles and TV on the Radio, so between all of that stuff, you've probably at least heard Shannon Funchess' unique and fantastic voice!

As far as Light Asylum goes, she's began working with Bruno Coviello and they have a show with MEN coming up in New York, but no word on a record. She is, however, working on a record with TV on the Radio's Gerard Smith under the name Rose Parade. Let's hope for more music coming out from Shannon Funchess in 2010 in either form!

Here is Light Asylum's shallow tears remixed by Fatima Al Qadiri and the original, as well as !!!'s Heart of Hearts featuring Shannon Funchess on vocals. AND if you are in NYC, check out Light Asylum with MEN March 10 at the Mercury Lounge.
