Lavender Diamond + My College Years

If there is one song that reminds me of my drunken/drugged out college years it's Madonna's Like A Prayer. It was played - without fail - at every single college party there was during my four years and probably for years after. Add Lavender Diamond, some tripped out animation from Jacob Ciocci of Paper Rad, art from Tom McConnell & Ron Rege Jr, and direction from Peter Glantz and you pretty much have that time I got lost on the main lawn while on mushrooms.

Oh college.

Anyways, I found this over at Tussy Talk (one of our blog friends you should TOTALLY check out) so enjoy and try not to get lost.

Queer Zines

Photobucket

Zines & self-publishing are super cool. I started making them as a young lass in the '90s & the awesomeness has never worn off. Fortunately lots of great people are still making great zines! One exciting way to get a whole bunch of queer zines all in one is by checking out Printed Matter's book Queer Zines, which "collects the variegated practices of zine makers past and present, from North America and Europe, and lists them alphabetically, starting with Toronto's 88 Chins and ending with the Dean Sameshima zine Young Men at Play. In a riotous assemblage of more than 200 pages, we find comprehensive bibliographies and sinful synopses for more than 120 zines by Alex Gartenfeld, excerpted illustrations and writings by zine makers, reprints of important articles in and about queer zines, a directory of important zine archives, and a list of zine outlets around the world. It also includes a 1980 interview with Boyd McDonald by Vince Aletti, Bimbox's pop-up genitalia (alas, not popping up here), Adam Block's early writings on zines from the Advocate, a "Where are They Now?" section that charts the careers of various queer zine pioneers, and excerpted interviews with GB Jones, Vaginal Davis, and Bruce LaBruce." (That's from Printed Matter's website.) You can purchase the book here.

Photobucket

Another cool queer zine project is B.T.F.A., an anonymous queer sex zine out of NYC. It's full of hot, strange and funny stories; the anonymity of the writers lends to an outlaw atmosphere of smart perverts creating a communal universe of sordid tales. You can get yourself a copy here.

Photobucket

I'll leave you with one more zine recommendation: A Hole in the Rubber by Orson Wagon. Wild tales moving in and out of (sur)reality with humor and a sharp eye, this little book will be loved by you, I guarantee it. It can be found at Needles & Pens in SF, or you can order it from their website.

Keep The Streets Empty For Me

The only thing I want to listen to when it gets dark out at 4:30 in the afternoon is Fever Ray.

This one is new.

The Hangover

So as you all know, I've been fagging out over azn pop bands and shit like that for who knows how long. Well...it's winter. And every winter, I turn into a Debbie Downer as well as the music taking a straight course to sad town. Seasonal Depression pretty much gets to us all.

I've recently become obsessed with super indie bands again (Korea, you're in trouble), and at the top of that list is Xiu Xiu. Followed by NSYNC. But anyways, Xiu Xiu...debuting with the LP "Knife Play", Jamie Stewart and pals (which has at points included Caralee McElroy, Yvonne Chen, and Sam Mickens of The Dead Science) released their last album in 2008 entitled "Women As Lovers", a return to more pop oriented melodies after the "The Air Force". "La Foret", and experimental pop masterpiece "Fabulous Muscles". They also released a record of early songs to tide us over for the 2010 release of "Dear God, I Hate Myself", which according to the title, all bets are fucking off. My favorite openly bisexual weirdo gay is coming back to us all. When they toured through Chicago and played the Pitchfork Festival (What year was that? I remember Annie and Out Hud were there...I think. I went to two of them) I totally lost my gay shit and threw my shirt onstage. LOST. MY. SHIT.

Xiu Xiu - You Are Pregnant, You Are Dead

Xiu Xiu - Asleep (The Smiths cover)

Xiu Xiu - I Luv The Valley OH!"

Grizzly Bear x Neon Indian

I'm pretty sure "Chillwave" as a genre was created as part of some hipster's marketing homework, but either way...these remixes from "Chillwavers" Neon Indian of the Grizzly Bear song Cheerleader are admittedly hitting the wintertime spot.

Grizzly Bear: "Cheerleader (Neon Indian 'Sega Genesis P-Orridge' Remix):

SALEM

SALEM is everything I want a band to be.

They made a mix for We Make It Good/The Fader.
They made a music video for Dirt.
I like this song Frost.

Volume 11: Salem

Pink socks, a dirty mattress, wallpaper peeling off the walls, empty cough syrup bottles, and soiled wall to wall carpeting all come to mind after repeated listens to this new Salem mix. It's either the perfect accompaniment to the fall/winter blues or soundtrack to scrawling your name on your bedroom wall in blood, it's up to you.

We Make It Good Mix Series - Volume 11: Salem

And here's their video for Dirt:

oh freddie

Can you believe it's been 18 years since Freddie Mercury died?? Sad!

defying gravity WAY before Idina (and by calling her Idina, I feel like I'm coming out as a fag in dyke's clothing)

well, i actually wasn't planning on letting in all hang out, but if you insist....

your gender presentation... its queering my mind!

dear teens (and other assorted media zombies) who worship someone whose name rhymes with Shady CaCa - know your history, respect your elders, and learn about a real legend.

i totally remember watching this concert on live tv, which is INSANE because i was only 9 at the time apparently? I still maintain that I was born at least 12 years old.

and warning! warning! this is blasphemous, but, does anyone think this was released today in honor of Freddie's death anniversary? (and does anyone else feel old because you don't recognize some of the muppets?)

omg janice WAILS on that axe <3.>

Holopaw

“A queer, a Peruvian, a redneck, a burnout and an asshole walk into a bar…” Holopaw’s Michael Johnson on Holopaw.

Gainesville, Florida's Holopaw are back after a four year hiatus with their latest record "Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness". Since their debut on SubPop in 2003, Holopaw have gone through some personnel changes and have evolved their sound a bit from a more alt-country/indie Americana band with electronic elements to something more akin to The Decemberists.

John Orth's slight vibrato and earnest lyrics float atop still jangly guitars and orchestral instrumentation as we follow the story of "The Little Stallion" throughout the record. The opening track "The Art Teacher and the Little Stallion" begins quietly but develops into a rich, full band effort carried along by lovely harmonies, violin melodies, and Orth's casually beautiful vocal delivery. The rest of the album continues in a similar vain with tracks like Black Lacquered Shame, Little Stallion with a Glass Jaw and the aforementioned opener being stand outs for me.

Besides the album being available now on Bakery Outlet Records, Holopaw also has a related art project on their website. The band asked two dozen artists to take a listen to the new record and respond visually. Over the next several weeks they will be posting the artwork inspired by "Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness" with the first submission from Brief Magazine's Topher Sinkinson depicting Cristiano Ronaldo, a matador and a gay rainbow pictured above. Check out Holopaw's website for more on this project and other news.

Before you my heart was acapella

I actually really like Kelis. I find her to be a breath of fresh air in the pop music industry, cause she takes chances with her sound and image and doesn't apologize for shit. Nobody has a voice like hers (though thin in parts, her husky tones are insane). Lately, Ms. Rogers has been planning a comeback of sorts, with rumored collaborations with Boyz Noize, Calvin Harris, Cee-Lo, and Crookers (which we've heard the product of), taking on a more dance and electronic oriented vibe. The alleged first single from this album, "Acapella", has been leaked by Kelis herself, and the result is a slinky jam produced by David Guetta.

Kelis - Acapella

I honestly hope for the best for her, because success in the US has been somewhat elusive (Bossy, Milkshake, Caught Out There...those aren't even her best songs). Collaborating to much success with Ol' Dirty Bastard, Busta Rhymes, N.E.R.D., and Richard X, she's made more of a name for herself in the UK, where "Lil Star" went to #3. She was also on the remix of Bjork's "Oceania" remix. 2010 might definately be the year of Kelis. Godspeed.

This is the single that should have been 2004.

AMGays

I am not an Adam Lambert fan, nor do I think that mainstream visibility for queers means anything in terms of actual forward movement for human rights, but I have to give it up to this sister for the faggiest performance the American Music Awards has ever seen. There's definitely a feigned blow job and a for real man-on-man smooch. The song is awful but see if you enjoy the gayness exploding all over that stage: it is quite palpable.

Lick the Star

This is not outright queer but is above & beyond latently so! Lick the Star is Sofia Coppola's first short film from 1998 & follows a clique of junior high girls as they navigate popularity politics, a conspiracy to poison the boys in their school, Flowers in the Attic and great 90s alternative queen bee fashion. You can watch it in its entirety below:

It should be mentioned that I found out about this little gem from fag city, a great queer blog by Billy Cheer well worth checking out.

Stealing hearts was a past time

Sia is a fucking creepy bitch. I say that lovingly because frankly, she is a weird ass bitch. WEIRDO GAYZ. Anyways, it's been a while since we heard anything from Ms. Furler aside from working with Christina Aguilerz. Fear no more. Lauren Flax and Sia have leaked their collaboration song together on the DJs Are Not Rockstars label, and it's the smoothest jam I've heard since "Pony". Although "Rock The Boat" comes a close sexond. That was a Freudian slip. But we will keep it there anyways. If you all remember, the 2 ladies had previously leaked a more heavy house version earlier this year. I don't know if this is a remix or a final mix for Sia's upcoming "We Are Born" record*, but we'll find out soon. Either way, it's pretty bomb hearing all these remixes.

Sia - You've Changed

Here is a shot by shot response to her video "Buttons" by some teen and his mom. No lie. He thanks her in the credits. LOVE.

*UPDATE: It's the final album version mix for Sia's upcoming solo album.

The UK sure is lucky. Their resident girl bands have all released singles and albums within 2009 (Minus the titans Girls Aloud) and I couldn't be happier. Cause here in the US, we don't have that genre of music readily available. Sure we got plenty of pop bitches singing whatever (Proof: I have been woken up by Lady Gaga on more than one occasion. Don't ever live on a street corner by a stop light anywhere remotely close to the gay area of whatever city if you don't like her cause it WILL HAPPEN). However, we haven't actually had a successful girl group in the US since...Danity Kane? And Diddy broke that shit up. Who was the last girl band anyways? Oh right. The Pussycat Dolls don't count. UK has it good, man. Their girl bands take influence from electronica and other random styles of music. I'm so sick of hip hop pop whatever. Club hop? The only person who should be in the category at your local Coconuts should be Missy Elliott.

As US citizens, we have been greatly robbed. No longer can I relegate friends to Ginger while I selfishly take the Posh role. No longer does America have ladies who sing, dance, act, and happen to be BFFs FOR REAL. So we gotta steal from the motherland.

Mini Viva - I WIsh (Cahill Radio Edit)

Sugababes - About A Girl

The Saturdays - One Shot

TLC - Diggin' On You (VINTAGGGgggeeee)
