Teengirl Fantasy remixed Light Asylum

Me and about 30 other people saw Teengirl Fantasy last year when they opened for Telepathe at the Empty Bottle. I can't speak for those people, but I've been a fan ever since. Teengirl Fantasy make psyched out, mind-dance music and they remix all our favorite songs. They've already remixed Pictureplane & Hunx and His Punx and now they have done an awesome rework of Light Asylum's Shallow Tears. They take the dreamy original and amp it up a little without losing that something that makes the original so special. It's not a club version by any stretch, but the remix feels lighter, more dancefloor friendly and could be a great song to end a night of dancing.

Check it out along with one of Teengirl Fantasy's originals.

Noisy Pig Replica

Bernardo Santarelli aka Berlin-based weirdo musician Noisy Pig will be releasing a new EP titled Replica on March 15. Replica is a 6 song limited edition CD/digital release and features collaborations from Stereo Total's Brezel Goering and Bratmobile/Partyline's Allison Wolfe. The CD version also includes a video and a "Replica origami box" so if you like more bang for your buck, you might wanna get the physical release.

In the meantime, check out a track from Replica, download an unreleased Noisy Pig remix from Hawney Troof and visit Noisy-Pig.com for more details on shows and stuff!

SXSW

So, I'm really bummed out that we aren't gonna make it to SXSW this year. First of all, I've never been and think it's about time I go. Second, who doesn't wanna see TONS of awesome bands/artists/djs/films/whatevers all in one place? And besides all that it's so fun to see friends, not work and be wild for a week. BUT...I'm not going. However, there's always next year (and maybe next year will be even better) and MAYBE you'll even see some sort of Young Creature/Soul Ponies collabo!

However, this is 2010 so let's forget about next year for now and check out some of the stuff that would surely be on our schedule this year.

Beyond Fantasy

If you like Trance Doll, you'll love Beyond Fantasy. Ok, so it's not actually a designer impostor perfume...it's an awesome new song from Pictureplane! Not sure if this song/rework of the 1992 UK hit Let Me Be Your Fantasy (from Baby D) is gonna end up on Pictureplane's next record, but I'm guessing we might hear it at one of the shows he's playing with Washed Out and Small Black on their current tour. Either way, I'm a big fan of Pictureplane and this is another stellar jam.

Check out Beyond Fantasy, Let Me Be Your Fantasy and tour dates below!

Goldfrapp's "Rocket" Video

The video for Goldfrapp's Rocket was released a couple of days ago and features Allison Goldfrapp blasting a person (in a duck tape mummy suit) off into space. There are also some futuristic dancing girls and lots of purple sky. Who knew a song about sending someone away on a rocket would result in a video where someone is sent away on a rocket? Deep. Either way, the video is nice to look at and it has a sense of humor, so I'm not a hater.

Rocket comes out March 8 and you can pick up Head First March 23 on Mute, but check out these sweet remixes RIGHT NOW.

Chicago loves the remix

So since our blog was added to Hype Machine (and use Soundcloud) we get a lot of music sent to us. Most of it is stuff we'd never post because it's either bad or just not relevant to our (primarily) queer blog. However, since we are in Chicago I feel like we should support a couple of local artists who are doing some pretty great stuff.

The first of the songs I'm gonna highlight from Chicago area producers/djs comes from This Guy I Know. We first internet-met TGIK when he sent us over a remix he did of Bright Eyes' First Day of my Life in response to our Valentine's Day post, and we're sure glad he did. TGIK has a way of reworking songs so elegantly that they could easily be mistaken for an original version, and this Yeah Yeah Yeahs Maps remix is no exeception. Good stuff!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps (TGIK Remix) (Alt)

The next selections are from Chicago's Midnight Conspiracy. Midnight Conspiracy are producers/djs/party-throwers and bloggers for the Members Only AV blog and are getting a lot of attention for their remixes. They've only put out a couple of remixes so far, but they're both really good, so it makes sense they'd be all over the 'net. I tried to choose which one I liked best to post, but I'm just gonna give you both! Check out a dubstep remix of Esser's Headlock and a hyped up dancefloor version of Chromeo's Night By Night.

Hole?

Today a song called Skinny Little Bitch was released under the band name 'Hole'. For those of you who didn't live as a teenager in the 90's, that was @CourtneyLoveUK's band that was pretty awesome and important to a lot of girls and gays. The band that wrote Skinny Little Bitch, however, is the not the Hole of the 90's. This incarnation of Hole is Courtney Love and some studio musicians writing irrelevant alt-rock music. There's no Patty Schemel, no Eric Erlandson and not even a Melissa Auf Der Maur anywhere near this, so for our purposes, let's refrain from calling it Hole.

Hole, for a lot of us, was like a gateway band into riot grrrl. Without Hole would Midwestern kids like me have heard of Bikini Kill or countless other 'girl' bands? I'm not so sure. Their influence on weirdo teen girls of the era is undeniable. But besides all that, Live Through This consisted of great song after great song and although not AS good, Pretty On The Inside is a classic too. To be honest, I still think Live Through This is pretty much amazing and will proudly wear my Hole tshirt whenever I dig it out of the pile of black tshirts on my floor...But I would be lying if I said I liked this new song. I mean, I it's no surprise since Celebrity Skin was terrible as well, but with so much talk over the years about Nobody's Daughter I guess I just expected more from "Hole".

But you don't take my word for it...

Owen takes off his shirt

Owen Pallett has released a (very slightly NSFW) video for Lewis Takes Off His Shirt from his latest album Heartland. Jason masks, witches, knives, orange Crush and some sweet animation all make appearances, so take like 5 minutes and check it out!

Also enjoy the audio version of Lewis Takes Off His Shirt and the Simon Bookish remix of Keep The Dog Quiet.

CREEP remixes Wetdog

It's only been a week or so since we mentioned CREEP's remix of Baghdaddy's Hot Shit, but they are already back with another remix. This time they've dedicated their dark electronics to a rework of the all girl British band Wetdog and although there's really not much that you will recognize from the original version, it's probably a great indication of what we can expect from CREEP. Either way, I'm really liking this sound right now and I'm definitely looking forward to more from Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard as CREEP.

Check out this awesome video from NGUZUNGUZU's for Got U/Ring to It. The AMAZING Leilah Weinraub made the video. I love her and I love this video!

SSION - Clown

Even though last time we wrote about SSION we got dissed on twitter (apparently we aren't 'cool' enough to post about Cody Critcheloe or SSION?) we're still gonna post about SSION. In fact, I hope everyone posts about SSION because without people spreading the word about indie/underground/weirdo artists nobody would know who or what a SSION is, or alot of other awesome bands/artists/whatevers for that matter.

Anyways, SSION released a video for their song Clown today. The video is a re-edit of clips from SSION's BOY and looks SPECTACULAR. I didn't get a chance to see BOY when it screened in Chicago, so I'm hoping they release a DVD version or something because it looks amazing.

Enjoy the video for Clown and the Glass Candy remix of the song and check out the trailer for BOY too!

Light Asylum

There are so many ways to discover new music these days. Whether it be from a friend, Hype Machine, other blogs, magazines or whatever, there are SO many ways! I can chalk up my recent discovery of New York's Light Asylum to twitter. When you're going through your tweets and JD Samson calls a band "Best Band Ever!", you should probably take notice. So I did, and now I'm sharing them with you!

Light Asylum is pretty much a moniker for singer/songwriter/musician Shannon Funchess. Even if you're like me and are just discovering this project, you're probably more familiar with Shannon Funchess than you may think. She toured as a vocalist with !!! in 07/08 and was a featured on Heart of Hearts. More recently she lent background vocals to Telepathe on Dance Mother and appeared in their So Fine video. She's also worked with Bunny Rabbit and the Cult of Miracles and TV on the Radio, so between all of that stuff, you've probably at least heard Shannon Funchess' unique and fantastic voice!

As far as Light Asylum goes, she's began working with Bruno Coviello and they have a show with MEN coming up in New York, but no word on a record. She is, however, working on a record with TV on the Radio's Gerard Smith under the name Rose Parade. Let's hope for more music coming out from Shannon Funchess in 2010 in either form!

Here is Light Asylum's shallow tears remixed by Fatima Al Qadiri and the original, as well as !!!'s Heart of Hearts featuring Shannon Funchess on vocals. AND if you are in NYC, check out Light Asylum with MEN March 10 at the Mercury Lounge.

CREEPs

CREEP is a new project from Brooklyn's Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard of Dreamburger. Although there are a couple of clips of the duo's original stuff on their Myspace page, their first release into the "blogosphere" is an awesome remix of Baghdaddy's Hot Shit. Can't say I've ever heard the original, but I think I like the remix better.

If the clips and remix aren't enough to be excited about, they've also recorded two songs with Romy Madley Croft on vocals for their upcoming release on new label TriAngle Records!

Check out the video for Hot Shit, a XX remix and some other spooky jams since I've been loving this witchy stuff lately.

Mind Reader CFCF Remix

If you are a reader of music blogs...which you probably are since you're reading this one...you've probably heard some CFCF remixes. Montreal's Mike Silver (AKA CFCF) has already turned out great remixes for HEALTH, Crystal Castles, Fan Death, Sally Shapiro (plus a bunch of others!) and now you can add Kingdom's Mind Reader to the list.

The CFCF remix brings the energy down a little bit, but keeps the vocal pretty much in tact, making it sound more like a fresh r&b song than the dancefloor jam that is the original. Good stuff!

Check it out along with a cover of Fleetwood Mac's Big Love below! AND don't forget to pick up the limited edition 10" of Mind Reader on Acephale!

Diamond Rings

Keeping with the Valentine's Day theme of the weekend how about some Diamond Rings? Actual diamond rings probably sell like hotcakes this time of year with all of the opposite marriage proposals that happen...but who cares about all that! I'll take my Diamond Rings in the form of music from Toronto based musician John O'Regan. If you are an avid blog reader or from Canada you may know Mr. O'Regan from his band The D'Urburvilles but he's been making cute and catchy electronic bedroom pop as Diamond Rings since last summer too. AND besides the music, he's put out a couple of the best no budget music videos I've seen in a long time with the help of directors Colin Medley and Jared Raab. LOVE John's dancing and the choreographed dance numbers, the 90's-esque green screen sequences and the cameo from Kids on TV's John Caffery in the new video!

Check out the brand new video for Wait And See along with the video and mp3 for All Yr Songs. Also check out the Diamond Rings Myspace page for tour dates with Owen Pallett, at SXSW and more!

Valentines Schmalentines

So, with Valentine's Day coming up it's a good time to post some love songs! I can't say I really care all that much about Valentine's Day but show me a person who doesn't like a good love song. There are probably millions of songs about love, but I've picked out a few of my favorites for this V-Day weekend and I'm not gonna lie, you will probably find some of them super cheesy. I get that...but love is cheesy and I love love...so maybe try to see past the cheese and think about the person/people/things/whatever you love.

You still think it's Christina?

Mysterious YouTube user iamamiwhoami posted another video today. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty confident after watching it the artist behind the campaign is NOT Christina Aguilera. I mean, they're practically giving it away in this one...but I don't recognize the woman in the video! But who knows...maybe the woman in the video is just a guest vocalist or simply a model.

Give it a watch, take a guess and enjoy my dark and darker horse candidate The Golden Filter's new single Hide Me.

Gaggle

As much as I may complain about Pitchfork being douchey, I still read it. Most of the time they are falling all over themselves about Animal Collective or Thom Yorke or something, but sometimes they hit on something I've never heard before that actually interests me. Such is the case with London based-22 strong-all girl "alt choir" Gaggle.

Gaggle are kind of like an exploded Telepathe or maybe a post apocalyptic Spice Girls or a giant Chicks on Speed reboot. They have just enough dark and quirk to be pretty much awesome and I'm glad I arrived at the party (albeit a little late). You can check out Gaggle on Myspace and look for their debut single I Hear Flies on March 8th from Transgressive Records. In the meantime, check out I Hear Flies and a couple of other tracks below!
