Owen Pallett has released a (very slightly NSFW) video for Lewis Takes Off His Shirt from his latest album Heartland. Jason masks, witches, knives, orange Crush and some sweet animation all make appearances, so take like 5 minutes and check it out!
Also enjoy the audio version of Lewis Takes Off His Shirt and the Simon Bookish remix of Keep The Dog Quiet.
Oh, hai! It seems the past 2 years, musical personalities in the queer community have split. Or at least in my world. Looking through my iTunes or whatever it is people use these days, one can divide my taste into 2 categories: faggy dance pop or faggy orchestral pop. And by orchestral pop, I mean Sufjan Stevens, not Yanni. As much as I love Yanni...
2009 and now 2010 are gearing up to be the most divisive yet. Do I invest in listening to the new Owen Pallett LP? Or do I give in and smush to Jeppe? The decision is too hard. Though lately, the tastes have run more in the lying in bed and listening to Chris Garneau. As you may recall, I mentioned him in an earlier post which you can find yourself, I'm too lazy. Anywho, dude released a second record which managed to sneak under my lazy ass radar. Whatever. I finally found it. And it's good. You know home girl likes to mood out and ignore phone calls every other day. Now I finally have a soundtrack for it. Let's thank Absolutely Kosher for putting this out cause seriously, I'm getting bored the fuck out by music lately.
Chris Garneau - No More Pirates
I can't like, not be mesmerized by those eyes. And that hat. I'm more jealous of the hat. Mostly cause I can't pull of the lazy nondescript baseball cap. Oh god this is coming out totally wrong.
Owen Pallett - Midnight Directives
Owen Pallett aka Final Fantasy has a new record out as well entitled "Heartland". I feel like we already had a record named "Heartland"***, but whatever. I may just be dreaming of "Harvest". Anyways, it's totally not what I thought it was going to be. Owen definitely went a little spacey on me but I'm not complaining. And I know I'm real late on the Pallett train, so whatever.
Also, watching that scene in "Thelma And Louise" where they blow up the 18-wheeler while listening to the new Dirty Projectors song was a moderately bad decision.
Dirty Projectors - Ascending Melody
***UPDATE: AHA, we DO already have a record named "Heartland". OK, like, 7, but whatever. This one:

In anticipation of Owen Pallett's new Final Fantasy album "Heartland" Domino Records have released "Lewis Takes Action" as a free download. The new Final Fantasy record is a concept album of sorts where "The songs themselves form a narrative concerning a farmer named Lewis and the fictional world of Spectrum. The songs are one-sided dialogues with Lewis, a young, ultra-violent farmer, speaking to his creator." Heartland is scheduled for release on January 12, 2010, more info can be found here and here.

Is there anything gayer than the remix? Remixes can turn an awful song into a gem or an already club banger into a rave joint. Case in point: The Todd Terry remix of EVerything But The Girl's "Missing". That song was awful and with a crappy club remix, it scored #1 on almost every chart on this musical planet. WTF? This means a few things...
1. Gays will buy anything with a 4/4 house beat.
2. Gays LOVE to dance (I do it in my home!).
3. Remixers know what we want.
Another case in point: Remixes can turn an ordinary song nobody ever will hear super popular. Who remembers "Cold Rock A Party" by MC Lyte? NOBODY! Because the general public only remembers the Bad Boy Remix featuring Missy Elliott and the occasional gruff "uh" from P. Diddy/Puff Daddy/Diddy/Sean Whatever. Let's break down a few songs that have gotten better with the remix treatment:
Shakira - She Wolf (Moto Blanco Radio Mix)
Any of the remixes is better than that tinny hollow sounding "She Wolf" song Shakira decided to release. That song sounds so underproduced and so crappy, I could make a better song on Garageband (And I have!). Seriously, come on. I'm not buying a record of crappy MIDI sounding shit. However, the Moto Blanco Radio Mix takes this piece of shit and turns it into a 90's dancefloor gem...strings, handclaps, and disco piano chords thrown in as well. Love it.
Natalie Imbruglia - Want (Cassette Club Remix)
I haven't heard from this bitch in years, so imagine my surprise to hear her new single "Want" and being blown away from it. It's already kind of a club song, with strings, disco beats, and a fat bassline. This remix just took that song (written by Coldplay!) and made it more atmospheric in the late night chill out sense. It's pretty good. That and the Blunt Laser Remix.
Death From Above 1979 - Black History Month (Girl On Girl Revision ft. Owen Pallett)
This song just rules. It ruled before the remix, and it rules after the remix. I love anything Owen Pallett puts his cute gay fingers on. Love him.
Also for some reason, this picture of Ken from Street Fighter fame showed up in Google image search for "remix". Hadouken!

I found myself post college without any gay men to look up to in music that weren't crafting dance jams (not that it was a bad thing) and feeling a bit desolate. Here are some bands with gay musicians that don't specialize in club music to balance out the spectrum:
Grizzly Bear has an insane singer named Ed Droste. It literally sounds like an angel whispering into my ear. A big, gay angel.
Owen Pallett is another cool dude who primarily plays the violin. He has done strings and arrangements for The Arcade Fire, The Hidden Cameras, and Beirut. He also fronts his own project called Final Fantasy. Here he is playing around with loop pedals doing a cover of "Fantasy" by Mariah Scarey.
