SSION - Clown

Even though last time we wrote about SSION we got dissed on twitter (apparently we aren't 'cool' enough to post about Cody Critcheloe or SSION?) we're still gonna post about SSION. In fact, I hope everyone posts about SSION because without people spreading the word about indie/underground/weirdo artists nobody would know who or what a SSION is, or alot of other awesome bands/artists/whatevers for that matter.

Anyways, SSION released a video for their song Clown today. The video is a re-edit of clips from SSION's BOY and looks SPECTACULAR. I didn't get a chance to see BOY when it screened in Chicago, so I'm hoping they release a DVD version or something because it looks amazing.

Kids on TV

Question: How do you describe awesomeness?

Answer: "Their music explores the worlds of house, experimental rock, no-rave, punk, soul, and acid. Their music, costumes, and video work reference many elements of queer history and culture." (-CBC Radio 3)

Besides general awesomeness, this is how you can attempt to describe the Canadian four piece band of musicians/filmmakers/artists known as Kids on TV.

Formed and based in Toronto, Kids on TV have been pumping out the queer jams, videos, performances, graffiti, rock operas, bathhouse shows and tons of other totally awesome-totally gay stuff since 2003. They've worked Boy George, Man Parrish and Yo Majesty, provided remixes for Lesbians on Ecstacy, played shows with Gang of Four, Ladytron, Crystal Castles, Les Georges Leningrad and tons of other good bands and they're signed to Chicks on Speeds records. Pretty impressive stuff!

They released their first full length Mixing Business with Pleasure in 2007, an EP called Shape Shifting Mutants last year and are working on their next album Pantheon to be released in the near future. If you haven't heard Kids on TV, their music is totally dancefloor friendly, but that's not all their trying to do. You can hear punk influences, tripped out rock, shoegazey sounds and indie electro (not to mention a cover of one of the YoungCreatures' faves, Goodbye Horses) all rolled up into an art (bath)house package!! SO...if you're like me and you just discovered Kids on TV you've got a lot of catching up to do!

To get us started I've included a couple of rad videos the Kids on TV crew made and a remix of their song Poison. You will also notice links to a not quite-SFW video for their cover of Roxy Music's In Every Dream Home a Heartache and a REALLY NSFW Super 8 film the band made-both of which you should totally check out. I'm really excited that we've been able to make friends with Kids on TV! Being able to share the work of bands like Kids on TV is EXACTLY why we do this blog, so you better believe we will keep you posted with updates on their new album and any other good stuff!

I love it when I remember to look into artists I like to see if they've made anything new and they HAVE made something new! That's exactly what happened when I went to Ryan Trecartin's vimeo page. Ryan Trecartin, as you probably know, is a Philadelphia based visual and video artist known for his psychedelic and psychotic video comments/parodies of family, pop culture, the internet, gender, identity and everything in between. His latest work P.opular S.ky (section ish) continues with the internet/global/trashy Amercian culture themes, warped voices, fake tan and fake pale faces, and general frenetic pace set in K.CoreaINC.K (section a) and Sibling Topics (section a). In short, another genius video.

I could go on trying to describe his work but my words can't possibly do it justice, so just WATCH. If you like what you see here, check out some of his older stuff on his YouTube page. Also, I've included a DJ mix from LA's DJ Total Freedom & Nguzunguzu (Total Freedom can be seen in some of Trecartin's work) and a track from Nguzunguzu's new EP. Enjoy!

God how I wish I was in NYC this week! Why?. It's time for the New York Queer Experimental Film Festival AKA MIX NYC. The festival kicks off tonight and runs through Sunday, November 22. Tonight's program is called Opening Night: Making All Local Stops and it features a short biography of Derek Jarman, a film by Gina Carducci & Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, and 11 other amazing looking films and videos by filmmakers from around the world.

I would like to say that there is one standout, must-see program at this year's festival, but after looking over the schedule every night features some sort of amazingness! (Did I mention how I wished I was in NYC for this?) However, if I had to choose only one, my gut would lead me toward tomorrow night. The show is titled Our Gorgeous Nightmares and is described like this on the MIX website:

"In the shadow of Jean Cocteau, Derek Jarman, and James Bidgood, this is an ensemble of artists who are taking their inspiration from the underworlds of the psyche and transcribing it into high-art. Where some have an aversion to expressions like “avant-garde” and “haute cinema,” others see hungry image-makers whose experimentation is ripe and dripping with glamor. We present to you a banquet of fragrant imagery and flagrant catastrophe, fashioned by directors making love with designers and actors doubling as models poised on Jungian runways in hyper-colored darkness and swimming in dreamscapes encrusted with poetic texture. Indulgence is the new black (and white). Nothing so glorious as these confections of imaginative expression…"

So, yeah, pretty much amazing! Here is "My Dead Brain" by Sarah Stuve (one of the works featured as part of Our Gorgeous Nightmares) as a taste for those of us who can't be there and if you are in NYC...PLEASE go to MIX 22!

Cody Critcheloe, of SSION and vice magazine fame, has written and directed a SSION movie that will be debuting tomorrow in Kansas City. The film is called BOY and as Kansas City's The Pitch blog describes : "The film weaves concert footage, music videos, a regular cast of Ssion characters and hundreds of extras into an integrated and typically eclectic glam-punk celebration of the fringe arts."

The after party will be a queer art star affair with Jeppe djing and guests like Casey Spooner (of Fischerspooner) in attendance.

If you're in KC, check out BOY at Tivoli Cinemas (4050 Pennsylvania Ave) at 7:30 pm tomorrow.

Queer fun in Chicago this week!

So after everyone's Pride/Shame hangovers have subsided, the city of Chicago has seemed a little off kilter the last week. No street drinking, combined with this amazing 70 degree weather, it for sure does not feel like a big gay summer to me.
However, this is such an awesome week to be queer in Chicago!
Friday June 10th is going to be a super fun night. First, it's Think Pink Radio Friday at Wang's (3317 N Broadway)! It's a ball, and not just because this blog has a friend-crush on that blog -



A) Wangs is a gorgeous teeny tiny baby bar with just enough room for the lighting to accentuate your best features, without the harassment of the usual Boystown/Wrigleyville fence sitters, stroller pushers, and lost trixies. So so so good. (Make sure you check out the artwork in the bathroom. Gold star lezzies, you might wanna avert your eyes at first... I sure did ... but I've grown to love it)

B) DJ Stinky Pinky plays super-fun music in such a chilled out, non-pretentious atmosphere! Seriously sweet remixes and queer dance tracks, he brings the perfect background track to your fancy shmancy martinis and $5 Tecate + Tequila shots (note: DANGEROUS). I almost don't want to post about it, because I love it so much and like always being able to get a spot in there.... but I'll share my secrets with you. The Creatures will be pre-gaming here for sure before we go see...



MEN live at Berlin! Do I really have to say any more than that? Accompanied by the Chances DJs and DJ Greg Haus (who also plays the freakiest and bestest music videos every Monday at a certain employer of 1/2 of the Creatures). I'm super super excited to finally see MEN! Working on the weekends really ruins my shot at seeing any good touring acts, so I'm a lucky girl to get a shot at it this Friday.

But hey, so you work on the weekends too? Bummer, but trust... we've got you. On Tuesday, July 14th, get ready for bffs of the blog, SF / PDX band Forever!


They are totally adorable, need I say more? Oh wait, we already did. In the midst of their US tour (have you seen them yet? If you live west of Chicago, there's a good chance they're on their way to your town!), they're stopping by to give us a taste of their sweet, sweet medicine. They'll be at Ronny's Bar (2101 N California ave), which has the most amazing PBR lined bathroom in the world. If you're squeamish or prone to squatting in public restrooms, stay home. Show starts at 9pm, and playing with The Cellphones, who I don't know a damn thing about but this girl has got a VOICE! So so so excited for this show and getting very pumped to get my dykebitch drink on in such fine company.
