Dance Yourself To Death

Dance Yourself To Death are a self-described New Wave/Pop/Rock band from Toronto who've been gaining steam in the queer music scene for the last few years. They first gained attention when Elton John discovered their music and cast them as a band in a film he was producing (who knew Elton John produced films?) in 2005. Since then, they have played with Peaches, Leisha Haley's band Uh Huh Her and The Hidden Cameras, amongst others, and released a full length album.

The songs I've heard from their debut album Ready For Love are a pop-rocky collection of tunes reminiscent of bands like Metric or The Sounds with some 80's inspired synth lines and a 70's rock vibe. Factor in their queer lovesongs and good haircuts and you have a band that should be huge pretty much any day now.

Ready For Love is available from their Big Cartel store and they have a remix EP (featuring a remix from JD Samson) on the way soon!

In the meantime, check out the Y&R remix of Midnight Affair and visit their Myspace page to hear more.

Kristen Stewart Dyke Watch pt III

Oh girl.

I couldn't even be bothered to make a post when you said "i love girls who are in love with me" To be honest, I felt a little baited. Are you mocking me, Kris? Proving me right? Love the gentle abuse?
Either way, the interview that appeared on "It's on with Alexa Chung" (I'm too old to know what this is, I think it's like TRL?, but I digress) is chock full of lezzie goodness, and you know just how to serve it. Dissection under the cut.

Let's examine:

Kristen Stewart says that when she was filming New Moon, she was listening to Joy Divison and Sia to keep her in mind set in the dark mood.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

That's right, OUR Sia. JD Samson's adorable gf (and apparently she's super famous abroad). (as an aside, at the gossip/men show in October, I heard some annoying, know-nothing, 'i do whatever fashion magazines tell me to do' gay dude say "Oh, that's JT SomeSome. He's DJing at Berlin later". as well as the yuppies complaining that they didn't get the bikini kill reference. that show bummed me out!) Sia was so excited about this she posted it on her twitter.

She then mentions going parasailing with her "friend" Nikki Reed... who somehow manages to pee on her??

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

While watersports (meaning sports on the water, as well as peeing on your girl because you're freaky like that) aren't exclusively lesbian, managing to do BOTH at the same time gets you some MAJOR lezzie points. Maybe you two should teach a class at GoodVibes?

And then, for the goal, she is asked about her preference.... between vampires and wolves. This is a pretty obviously leading question. Vampires are so straight it's not even funny, and any pop-culture link between vampires and lesbians is just a heteronormative fantasy (see: Lesbian Vampire Killers). Straight men love the idea of lesbian vampires. Remember that Vampire sub-plot on the L word? That was the season when Showtime realized it had a show that was 90% women having sex, and they should be appealing to the real viewers, straight men.

Wolves, however? GAY. gay gay gay. What lesbian is complete without a wolf tattoo? Remember that huge "scandal" when those awesome dykes wrecked that one guy for fucking with them? They called them the Lesbian Wolf Pack". It's important to remember that wolves are pack animals. They raise their young in groups... not unlike those amazing separatist communes on the 70's (Do these still exist? Do you live in one? Can I move in with you?)

Check out the lez-fest here: (it starts at around 4:00)

and, as always, no celebrities were harmed or outed in the writing of this article. we love you girl, come to the dark side! We've got plenty of dream catchers!

Off Our Backs remixed

With 2009 winding down I can't help but start thinking back on the year and all the bests and worsts. One of the bands that definitely stands out as a favorite is JD Samson, Ginger Brooks Takahashi and Michael O'Neill's MEN.

Having only played their first show back in April, MEN have since opened for Gossip and Peaches' fall tours and are gearing up for their own dates in Europe to support their self-released demo/EP. All the while crafting more totally radical and totally queer dance pop tunes to be released next year on a full length!

I saw MEN on the Gossip tour and was really impressed with how their music translated live and that they were able to make a political statement while remaining totally fun and entertaining. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more from MEN in 2010!

In the meantime, here are a few remixes of their song Off Our Backs and jump over here to buy the Limited Edition Demo EP. Also - check back soon for Young Creature's Best of 2009 lists!

Queer fun in Chicago this week!

So after everyone's Pride/Shame hangovers have subsided, the city of Chicago has seemed a little off kilter the last week. No street drinking, combined with this amazing 70 degree weather, it for sure does not feel like a big gay summer to me.
However, this is such an awesome week to be queer in Chicago!
Friday June 10th is going to be a super fun night. First, it's Think Pink Radio Friday at Wang's (3317 N Broadway)! It's a ball, and not just because this blog has a friend-crush on that blog -

A) Wangs is a gorgeous teeny tiny baby bar with just enough room for the lighting to accentuate your best features, without the harassment of the usual Boystown/Wrigleyville fence sitters, stroller pushers, and lost trixies. So so so good. (Make sure you check out the artwork in the bathroom. Gold star lezzies, you might wanna avert your eyes at first... I sure did ... but I've grown to love it)
and!
B) DJ Stinky Pinky plays super-fun music in such a chilled out, non-pretentious atmosphere! Seriously sweet remixes and queer dance tracks, he brings the perfect background track to your fancy shmancy martinis and $5 Tecate + Tequila shots (note: DANGEROUS). I almost don't want to post about it, because I love it so much and like always being able to get a spot in there.... but I'll share my secrets with you. The Creatures will be pre-gaming here for sure before we go see...

MEN live at Berlin! Do I really have to say any more than that? Accompanied by the Chances DJs and DJ Greg Haus (who also plays the freakiest and bestest music videos every Monday at a certain employer of 1/2 of the Creatures). I'm super super excited to finally see MEN! Working on the weekends really ruins my shot at seeing any good touring acts, so I'm a lucky girl to get a shot at it this Friday.

But hey, so you work on the weekends too? Bummer, but trust... we've got you. On Tuesday, July 14th, get ready for bffs of the blog, SF / PDX band Forever!

They are totally adorable, need I say more? Oh wait, we already did. In the midst of their US tour (have you seen them yet? If you live west of Chicago, there's a good chance they're on their way to your town!), they're stopping by to give us a taste of their sweet, sweet medicine. They'll be at Ronny's Bar (2101 N California ave), which has the most amazing PBR lined bathroom in the world. If you're squeamish or prone to squatting in public restrooms, stay home. Show starts at 9pm, and playing with The Cellphones, who I don't know a damn thing about but this girl has got a VOICE! So so so excited for this show and getting very pumped to get my dykebitch drink on in such fine company.

What are you doing this week? Have we missed anything particularly fabulous? Will we see you there?

Brand new song from MEN!

So, you all know MEN right? Of course you do!

Well...get excited because they just sent us their BRAND NEW song Credit Card Babie$!!

I was already a big fan of MEN's brand of dance music, but this song (and their other new song Off Our Backs) takes it to the next level! These songs have more of a post-punk/disco thing going on and might just be even more infectious than their previously released songs. Also-- as awesome as Credit Card Babie$ is already, I'm excited to hear the remixes that are probably being started right now! These songs are absolutely made for the dancefloor!

Besides making the songs you can't wait to dance to at your local sweaty dance party, MEN always have something to actually SAY with their music...so be sure to check out the lyrics on their Myspace page!
