She's Lost Control

On April 29 in Austria Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu will team up to do a live cover of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures album. I imagine some people are gonna be doing the indie rock version of shaking and crying while others will find it blasphemous to even consider covering such a monumental record, but either way it's an interesting concept. I happen to love covers (even bad ones) and collaborations so this is something I'd definitely go see. Two good bands coming together to cover a great record? Yes please.

As a side note, the rest of the lineup for the donaufestival isn't too shabby either. You can catch Panda Bear, Peaches, Dan Deacon and more April 28 - May 8 in Krems, Austria.

In the meantime here are some tracks from Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof and some other Joy Division covers. Enjoy!

Xiu Xiu - Dear God, I Hate Myself

Deerhoof - Vivid Cheek Love Song

Grace Jones - She's Lost Control (Joy Division cover)

LCD Soundsystem - No Love Lost (Joy Division cover)

You should've seen me in my prime

I'm well aware that this is a queer blog and I ride the queer line more than the 36 bus, but kids, it's hard. I don't know any queer bands really. Which explains my fascination with not quite mainstream, still quite underground pop, which I call weirdo pop (I throw the term weirdo around a lot apparently). It's cool to be weird. And by weird, I mean not giving a fuck what's popular and managing to get your fuck on regardless of what culture tells you. Acts like Sgt. Sass, Bry'nt, and the love of my life Roisin Murphy have been doing their own thing for a while now whether or not we catch on. Sometimes, these jams manage to sneak under the radar and into pop culture. Remember that Gucci ad campaign with Roisin's cover of "Slave To Love"? Love it. And I think I find myself nowadays not really caring whether or not something is queer related. Sexuality doesn't determine quality jams. If it's a quality song, I'm on your side.

That being said, I really wish I knew more queer music. Instead, you're gonna have to settle for pop music made by bands you've either never heard of, never wanted to hear, or your new favorite. WEIRDO POP.

Xiu Xiu - Gray Death

Discovery - So Insane

jj - masterplan

Roisin Murphy - Momma's Place

The Hangover

So as you all know, I've been fagging out over azn pop bands and shit like that for who knows how long. Well...it's winter. And every winter, I turn into a Debbie Downer as well as the music taking a straight course to sad town. Seasonal Depression pretty much gets to us all.

I've recently become obsessed with super indie bands again (Korea, you're in trouble), and at the top of that list is Xiu Xiu. Followed by NSYNC. But anyways, Xiu Xiu...debuting with the LP "Knife Play", Jamie Stewart and pals (which has at points included Caralee McElroy, Yvonne Chen, and Sam Mickens of The Dead Science) released their last album in 2008 entitled "Women As Lovers", a return to more pop oriented melodies after the "The Air Force". "La Foret", and experimental pop masterpiece "Fabulous Muscles". They also released a record of early songs to tide us over for the 2010 release of "Dear God, I Hate Myself", which according to the title, all bets are fucking off. My favorite openly bisexual weirdo gay is coming back to us all. When they toured through Chicago and played the Pitchfork Festival (What year was that? I remember Annie and Out Hud were there...I think. I went to two of them) I totally lost my gay shit and threw my shirt onstage. LOST. MY. SHIT.

Xiu Xiu - You Are Pregnant, You Are Dead

Xiu Xiu - Asleep (The Smiths cover)

Xiu Xiu - I Luv The Valley OH!"
