I love a good cover. Who doesn't? Sometimes they're straightforward and other times, bands turn these songs into something so unimaginable, it hurts to even think about. Being in a band, I've had MANY a dream about covers. And when I think about it, all I want to cover is "Love Will Never Do Without You" by Janet Jackson. "Surf City" by Jan & Dean runs a very close second. Ugh covers.

Judee Sill was a folk singer from the 70's, achieving critical acclaim for her 2 albums but not much commercial success. She wrote the song "Lady-O" for The Turtles which would later turn up on her own self titled debut. Filled with influences ranging from country, gospel, and piano pop, "Judee Sill" and "Heart Food" were critical classics. After many failed attempts at success and multiple accidents leaving her in crippling back pain, Judee Sill turned to drugs before dying in 1979 from a drug overdose.
30 years later, Judee Sill is being given the attention she so rightfully deserved. The independent label American Dust announced plans to release the "Crayon Angel: A Tribute To The Music Of Judee Sill" album. The album features interpretations by Bill Callahan (Smog), Daniel Rossen (Grizzly Bear, Department Of Eagles), Frida Hyvonen, Beth Orton, and Final Fantasy. It really is a great album and a new way to get into the beaty of Judee Sill's amazing songwriting. It's a shame it took so long for Judee to be appreciated, but I'm glad her time has come.

In other unrelated news, Quasi have signed to indie powerhouse Kill Rock Stars. Sam Coomes (Elliott Smith, Heatmiser), Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks), and Joanna Bolme (Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks) have left Touch & Go Records and will release their follow-up record to "When The Going Gets Dark" on October 27th.
